Kay Krapfl was born in Dallas, Texas and, as a child, had a strong interest in all forms of art. Today her work is made up of the ideas and techniques that she has learned through constant experimentation. In addition, she has studied with Stephen Pace of the New York Museum of Modern Art, George McNeil of Pratt Institute, Ann Cushing Gantz of Dallas, John Gordon of the Des Moines Art Institute, and has attended classes at the American Academy of Art in Chicago among others. Kay is a member of the Portrait Society of America, and a founding member of the Williamsburg Portrait Guild. She is also a member of Discover the Arts and participates in the Greater Lanexa Studio Tour.

Kay has had her artwork exhibited in the Mountainlair Gallery of West Virginia University, the Ogelbay Institute in Wheeling, Delf Norma Museum in Moundsville, and at M.A.C. in West Virginia. She has also exhibited her work in numerous juried shows in Iowa, Pennsylvania and Chicago, as well as a number of private collections. One of her paintings, “The Winter of ‘78”, was selected as Best West Virginia painting in Exhibit 60 for 1978 and has also won a purchase award.

Kay has won numerous awards and prizes for her work and has been featured in a 1975 Exhibition Program on WWVV-TV. Her work was also chosen as the poster for Williamsburg’s An Occasion for the Arts in 2003.

Kay works in different art media including oil, pastel, pen & ink, watercolor, and acrylic. She also combines watercolor with pen & ink. While she doesn’t have a favorite medium, she enjoys them all. Kay also enjoys different styles of art but the Impressionistic style can be readily seen in most of her work.

In Virginia you can see some of her work at New Town Art Gallery in Williamsburg, Va., This Century Gallery in Williamsburg, and the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton.

Kay enjoyed teaching children, teens and adults at the Village Art Gallery of Chicago from April 1987 through September 1997, and feels she learned a great deal from her students. She has since moved to Williamsburg, Virginia and started her own school where she continues to enjoy teaching and learning from her students. It is her hope to continue to grow in her work and in teaching, having a love for both.
